It was established in 1967 as Reactor School from the sponsorship of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in response to support and manage the nuclear energy infrastructure in the country.
In 1976 it achieved a new name Centre for Nuclear Studies (CNS) and become an independent public university in 1997.
